# How open sessions follow a switch

> How long an open Claude Code session keeps the account it is leaving, what can pin it, and why Codex never follows.

## Claude Code

An open Claude Code session follows a switch within about 33 seconds, with no restart. It caches its login for 30 seconds, plus 3 for its next read. On one Mac with Claude Code 2.1.278, switches made 8, 20 and 28 seconds into a session took effect 32.3 to 33.5 seconds in.

Until then the session uses the account it is leaving. As read in 2.1.294, its `/status` already names the account switched to, from the rewritten config. `/usage` and every request still use the login it holds.

As read in 2.1.284, sessions and the daemon that renews their login read it again under the write lock before writing. None can write the previous account back.

Not known: whether a request under way during a switch finishes, and what Claude Code does at a limit.

## A login file behind the keychain

As read in Claude Code 2.1.294, a `/login` on macOS while the keychain is locked, as over SSH, writes the login to `~/.claude/.credentials.json`. No switch removes that file. A session that cannot read the keychain signs in with it.

Any file there pins open sessions: a login, `{}` or a file Pitboard cannot read. As read in 2.1.294 and not measured, a pinned session keeps its login until it renews it, 5 minutes before expiry, or restarts. Sessions started later use the account switched to.

A switch then says so in place of the 33 seconds. Other changes and reads warn with `fallback_login`. `pitboard status --offline` does not look for the file. [Claude Code over SSH uses another account](/troubleshooting#claude-code-over-ssh-uses-another-account) has the fix.

As read in 2.1.294, a session open while the keychain is locked keeps its login and follows no switch. One started then signs in with the login file, or is signed out without one.

## Codex

As read in Codex 0.154.0, everything that runs Codex holds its login in memory until it stops. None follows a switch, so Pitboard never switches Codex by itself. [What happens to open sessions](/guides/switch#what-happens-to-open-sessions) says what to restart.
