# The install script

> Where the install script puts each file, what it needs and how to choose another folder or release.

The install script installs the command line of the most recent release on macOS and Linux, not a pre-release and not the app. [Install with the script](/install#install-with-the-script) gives the command.

## What it installs

It puts `pitboard` in `~/.local/bin`, and the man page and the bash, zsh and fish completions under `~/.local/share`. zsh loads the completion only after a change to `~/.zshrc`, as [`completions`](/reference/integration-commands#completions) says.

It checks its download against the release's checksums. [Check the install script](/install/verify#check-the-install-script) checks the script itself.

It needs `curl` or `wget`, and `sha256sum` or `shasum`. Without `curl`, run:

```sh theme={null}
wget -qO- https://usepitboard.com/install.sh | sh
```

| Where it runs | What it does |
| - | - |
| As root or under `sudo` | Installs nothing, as Pitboard [changes nothing as root](/troubleshooting/refused-changes#pitboard-changes-nothing-as-root). |
| On Windows | Installs nothing. Install the app, or the command line from a release's zip, as [A release file](/install/other-ways#a-release-file) says. |

## Put the folder on your PATH

The script changes no shell profile. Where `~/.local/bin` is not on your `PATH`, it prints the command that puts it there for your shell:

```text theme={null}
/Users/me/.local/bin is not on your PATH. To put it there, run this, then open another terminal:
  echo 'export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.zshrc
```

If another `pitboard` comes first on your `PATH`, the script names it. Remove that copy, or put `~/.local/bin` before it. Daily renewal may run the copy you remove: see [Daily renewal stopped working](/troubleshooting/renewal#daily-renewal-stopped-working).

## Install into another folder

Set `PITBOARD_INSTALL_DIR` to the folder's full path. The man page and completions go in the `share` folder beside it, here `~/tools/share`:

```sh theme={null}
curl -fsSL https://usepitboard.com/install.sh | PITBOARD_INSTALL_DIR="$HOME/tools/bin" sh
```

## Install one release

Each release has its own copy of the script, which installs that release: `https://github.com/datlechin/pitboard/releases/download/v<version>/install.sh`.
