# Account windows and shared links

> Look up account windows, the sign-in window, downloads, the Open Link window, refused links and the Share extension.

Each enrolled account has one window on its tool's site: claude.ai for Claude Code, chatgpt.com for Codex. A login with no label has none. For signing in and a window's limits, see [Use each account's site](/guides/account-windows).

## Account windows

| Opens from | Item |
| - | - |
| Pitboard's item in the menu bar, the **File** menu and the Dock icon's menu | **Open claude.ai as work**, or **Open claude.ai** and then the account when the site has several |
| An account's shortcut menu in the **Accounts** pane | **Open claude.ai** or **Open chatgpt.com** |
| The [**Open Link** window](#open-link-window) | **Open** |

Opening an open window brings it to the front.

The title is the account's label. When the other site has an account with the same label, the title adds the site: **work (claude.ai)**. The subtitle is the page's title, or the site's name.

The window opens at the last page of its site it showed, other than a sign-in page. Otherwise it opens at `https://claude.ai/` or `https://chatgpt.com/`.

Until the app has read the accounts, the window shows **Reading accounts**. A failed read shows **Couldn't Read Accounts**, the reason and **Try Again**. The window closes once a read no longer lists its account.

| Action | Toolbar | Menu |
| - | - | - |
| Previous or next page | **Back**, **Forward** or a two-finger swipe | **Go** > **Back** (Command-Left Bracket), **Forward** (Command-Right Bracket) |
| Reload | **Reload**, which **Stop** replaces while a page loads | **View** > **Reload Page** (Command-R) |
| Zoom | A pinch | **View** > **Zoom In** (Command-Plus), **Zoom Out** (Command-Minus), **Actual Size** (Command-0) |
| Find | None | **Edit** > **Find** > **Find** (Command-F) |

Zoom steps from 50% to 300%, as in Safari. It resets when the window closes. **Actual Size** also undoes a pinch. The find bar searches when you press Return.

The page's shortcut menu has no **Download Linked File**, **Download Image** or **Download Video**: WebKit would cancel those downloads.

## Notes

Notes show one at a time at the top of the window. **Dismiss** (an x) closes one.

| Note | Shown when |
| - | - |
| **Sign in to claude.ai as [me@example.com](mailto:me@example.com). Google's sign-in does not work inside apps.**, then the site's sign-in steps | The first time this [Pitboard directory](/reference/files#the-pitboard-directory) opens the window, and after **Remove Website Data** |
| **Google does not allow its pages inside apps, so Pitboard stopped it. Sign in as [me@example.com](mailto:me@example.com) another way.**, then the steps and the Google services the window cannot connect | A page went to Google's sign-in |
| **claude.ai opened a page in your browser. Anything you connect there goes to the claude.ai account your browser is signed in to, which may not be "work".** | A page sent a web page to your browser without a click |
| **This window doesn't open links to other apps, such as this vscode: link.** | A link to another app was stopped |

## Pages and links

| Address | Goes to |
| - | - |
| The site's pages, on its host or [an alias](#refused-links) | The window, even from a link that asks for a new tab |
| chatgpt.com's sign-in pages, on `auth.openai.com`, `login.live.com`, `login.microsoftonline.com` and `appleid.apple.com` | The window, or a [sign-in window](#sign-in-window) |
| Google's sign-in, `accounts.google.com` | Nowhere, with a [note](#notes) |
| Any other web page | Your default browser |
| An email address, `mailto:` | Your default email app |
| A link to another app, such as `vscode:` | Nowhere, with a [note](#notes) |

Email and app links act only when clicked or opened in a new window.

A frame inside the page, such as an artifact, loads any address but a file on your Mac.

A page's alert, confirmation or question opens as a dialog titled with the asking host: **claude.ai says**. A frame's is titled **An embedded page at artifact.example says**, or **An embedded page says** when it has no host.

A file upload opens the standard Open dialog.

A page that fails to load or keeps crashing shows **Couldn't Load the Page**: see [A window does not load its page](/troubleshooting/account-windows#a-window-does-not-load-its-page).

## Sign-in window

A page opens a sign-in window when it opens a sign-in page or a blank page in a new window. Only the site's page or a sign-in page in the account's window can, never a frame.

It opens centred on the account's window, at the size the page asks for. It defaults to 500 by 640 points and is never smaller than 320 by 400.

It shares the account's website data, so a sign-in there is the account's.

Its title is the page's title, or the page's host until it has one. Its subtitle is the host.

Its page loads only the site, the site's sign-in pages and a blank page. Anything else goes where the account's window would send it, and notes show there.

It has no toolbar and opens no window of its own. It closes when:

* its page closes it, as a finished sign-in does
* you close it or the account's window
* you choose **Remove Website Data**
* another sign-in window opens in its place

Whether chatgpt.com's **Continue with Microsoft** and **Continue with Apple** open a sign-in window is not known.

## Downloads

Downloads go to your Downloads folder. If you denied Pitboard that folder, see [Downloads are not saved](/troubleshooting/account-windows#downloads-are-not-saved).

A download never replaces a file: a second `report.pdf` is saved as `report 2.pdf`, then `report 3.pdf`.

| Download | Saved |
| - | - |
| Started by the site's own page | At once |
| Started by anything else, such as an artifact | After you click **Download** in **Download "report.csv" from example.com?**, or **Download "report.csv"?** when the host is not known |
| Started in a sign-in window, or from an address that is not `https:`, `blob:` or `data:` | Never |

**Downloads** in the toolbar appears once the window has a download, and lists them newest first. An ended one shows **Downloaded**, **Cancelled** or why it failed.

**Cancel** (an x) stops a running download and deletes what it wrote. **Show in Finder** (a magnifying glass) shows a finished file. **Clear** takes the ended downloads off the list.

A failed download's partial file is deleted. Downloads go on after the window closes.

Quitting Pitboard while a download runs asks **A download is in progress. Quit anyway?**, with the count when there are several. **Quit** stops every download and deletes what each wrote.

## Remove Website Data

**File** > **Remove Website Data** acts on the account's window in front. It asks **Remove claude.ai data for "work"?**, with **Remove** and **Cancel**.

**Remove** clears everything the site keeps in that window. That signs the window out on this Mac only. The site is not told.

The window starts again at the site's home, at 100% zoom, with the sign-in note.

Forgetting an account also deletes its window's data: see [Where account windows keep their data](/security#where-account-windows-keep-their-data).

## Open Link window

The **Open Link** window asks which account opens a shared link. Nothing opens until you choose, even when the site has one account.

| Shows | When | Buttons |
| - | - | - |
| **Open this claude.ai link as:**, the link and the accounts | The link's site has an account with a window | **Cancel**, **Open** |
| **No claude.ai Account**, the link and **None of the accounts Pitboard has opens claude.ai. Add one, and this link waits here until you choose it.** | No account has a window on the link's site | **Open in Browser**, **Cancel**, **Add Account** |
| **Can't Open This Link** and the reason | The link is [refused](#refused-links) | **OK** |
| **Reading accounts**, or **Couldn't Read Accounts** and the reason | As in an [account window](#account-windows) | **Cancel**, and **Try Again** after a failure |
| **No Link to Open** and how to share a page | No link is waiting, as in a window macOS restored | **Close** |

An account whose window is open shows **[me@example.com](mailto:me@example.com), window open** under its label.

It selects the account you last chose for the site since Pitboard started, else the account in use, else the first.

For 750 ms after the accounts appear, **Open** is dimmed and a double-click on an account does nothing. That stops a Return meant for another app.

A link brings the window to the front. A second link replaces the first, and the selection and the 750 ms wait start again.

If the account's window is open, it loads the link, and **Back** returns to the page before. Otherwise the window opens on the link.

**Add Account** opens the Pitboard window's **Add Account** dialog for the site's tool.

## Refused links

The Share extension and the **Open Link** window refuse these links. Only the **Open Link** window gives the last reason.

| Link | Reason |
| - | - |
| On another site, such as `example.com` or `www.claude.ai`, or with a port | **Pitboard opens claude.ai and chatgpt.com links only. This link is on example.com.**, naming the host and any port |
| With a user name before the host | **Pitboard opens claude.ai and chatgpt.com links only.** |
| A sign-in link: under `/magic-link` on claude.ai, or `/api/auth` on chatgpt.com | **Pitboard doesn't open claude.ai sign-in links from outside: one would sign the window in as whoever the link belongs to. Sign in inside the account's claude.ai window.** |
| Not `http` or `https`, or with a `.` or `..` path segment | **There is no claude.ai or chatgpt.com link in what was shared.** |
| Longer than 8192 characters | **What was shared is too long to be a claude.ai or chatgpt.com link.** |
| A [Pitboard link](#pitboard-links) this version cannot read | **This Pitboard link isn't one this version of Pitboard can read. Update Pitboard and share the page again.** |

Pitboard opens an `http` link, or one with no scheme such as `claude.ai/new`, as `https`. A link on `chat.openai.com`, `www.chatgpt.com` or `chat.com` opens as the same link on `chatgpt.com`. Each of those hosts redirects there with the path kept, measured on 29 September 2026.

## Pitboard links

The Share extension hands a page to the app as a Pitboard link: `pitboard://open?url=` followed by the page's link, percent-encoded.

```text theme={null}
pitboard://open?url=https%3A%2F%2Fclaude.ai%2Fchat%2F0e5a
```

Anything on your Mac can open a Pitboard link, so one only ever shows the **Open Link** window.

The app [refuses](#refused-links) one with a port, a user name, a fragment, a host other than `open` or a path other than `/`. Its query must be one non-empty `url` and nothing else.

## Share extension

The app includes a Share extension, **Pitboard** in a browser's Share menu. If it is missing, see [Pitboard is missing from the Share menu](/troubleshooting/account-windows#pitboard-is-missing-from-the-share-menu).

It is offered for one web page at a time. It checks the page against the [refused links](#refused-links), then hands it to the app it came in as a [Pitboard link](#pitboard-links).

| Shows | When | Buttons |
| - | - | - |
| **Opening in Pitboard** | While it hands the page over | None |
| **Can't Open This Link** and the reason | The page is refused. Pitboard does not start. | **OK** |
| **Couldn't Open Pitboard** and the reason | macOS could not open the app, or the extension cannot find it: **Pitboard couldn't find the app this extension came with.** | **OK** |

For what the extension can reach, see [Links shared from a browser](/security#links-shared-from-a-browser).
